Report: Hamas operatives call for attacks on U.S. targets

Hamas operatives have been pushing their leadership to authorize attacks on U.S. targets throughout the Middle East, TIME magazine reported on Friday.

According to the N.Y.-based publication, operatives attending a recent meeting of the Islamic group called for strikes against American targets as a response to what they called the Bush administration's hostile policy towards them.

Hamas has previously refrained from attacking U.S. targets. Last week, A U.S. volunteer, Michael Philips, was kidnapped near the West Bank village of Nablus and released a day later unharmed by a previously unknown Palestinian group.

Western nations have cut off their aid to the Palestinian Authority since Hamas won a majority in the last Palestinian parliamentary elections. The Islamic group has repeatedly turned down offers to renew the aid in return for its renunciation of violence and recognition of Israel's right to exist.
