Fourth family member arrested in rape of Tiberias teen
By Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondent, and Itim

Tiberias Police on Sunday arrested the brother-in-law of a 16-year-old Tiberias girl who was allegedly raped by her father and brother over the Sukkot holidays.

The brother-in-law is the fourth family member arrested in connection to the case, including the mother who was arrested and released under restrictive conditions shortly after the incident allegedly took place.

The girl's 63-year-old father is suspected of raping his daughter when she visited the family home for the Jewish New Year holiday at the end of September. The girl did not originally want to return home from her boarding school in the north, but was persuaded to do so by her mother.

Last Thursday, Tiberias police arrested the girl's 28-year-old brother for the suspected repeated rape of his 16-year-old sister, a week after the girl's father was detained over the same crime.

Police believe that other family members were involved in the alleged rape, as well as previous sexual offences involving the girl.

The police believe that upon her return, the girl's father locked her in the bathroom and raped her twice at knifepoint, before allegedly allowing her brother to rape her as well.

The alleged attacks were discovered after the girl managed to escape the house through a bathroom window, and informed the head of her boarding school, who contacted the police.

Since his arrest, Nazareth Magistrate's Court has twice extended the remand of the girl's father, and he is to remain in custody until October 17. Some 20 years ago, the father served three years in jail for the rape of his older daughter.

The court on Thursday also extended the brother's remand by one week.

The mother was arrested a week ago on suspicion of cooperating with her husband to conceal the alleged rape. She has since been released to conditional house arrest.

The head of Tiberias police, Ilan Sardal, said that according to suspicions, the girl has been raped and sexually assaulted on numerous occasions.

"This is one of the most shocking cases I have come across in my service as a police officer," Sardal said.

As police questioned the girl, it emerged that her older sister had allegedly been raped by a 28-year-old cousin and another family member.

Police are also investigating whether or not members of the family raped an additional, younger daughter.
