U.S. court sentences man to 7-years in prison for dealings with Hamas
By The Associated Press

The former chief executive of a computer company was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison for funneling money to an official of the militant Palestinian group Hamas.

Bayan Elashi and two of his brothers were convicted last year in federal district court of financial dealings with a terrorist.

Prosecutors said the men tried to hide a $250,000 (-200,000) investment in their Richardson computer company by the Hamas official, Mousa Abu Marzook, by making it look like his wife's money.

Judge Sam A. Lindsay is scheduled to sentence Ghassan Elashi on Thursday. A jury found Ghassan and Bayan Elashi guilty on 21 counts of conspiracy, money laundering and dealing in property of a terrorist.

Basman Elashi, who was found guilty on three conspiracy counts, was scheduled for sentencing Friday.

Lawyers for the Elashis argued during the trial that the transactions were business deals with Marzook, who was married to the Elashis' cousin.

Marzook and his wife were also indicted but never captured. Marzook was deported from the United States in 1995, when the federal government named him a terrorist. He is believed to be living in Syria.

The Elashis were active in the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, a Muslim charity that was shut down in 2001 after the government accused it of funneling more than $12 million (-9.6 million) to Hamas. Holy Land and several of its officials, including Ghassan Elashi, are scheduled to go on trial in February in federal court in Dallas.

The Elashis and two of their brothers also were convicted in 2004 of conspiring to ship technology to countries that the U.S. government considers supporters of terrorism.
