At least one Palestinian killed in explosion in Gaza tunnel
By News Agencies

An explosion collapsed a tunnel under the Gaza-Egypt border early Friday, trapping five militants inside and killing at least one, Palestinians said.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of the Fatah movement of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, said the five were members. The group refused to say what they were doing.

After first blaming Israel for the explosion, the militant group later confirmed that it had not been caused by an Israel Air Force strike. The Israel Defense Forces said it had no troops inside Gaza and denied involvement in the incident.

Israel often attacks tunnels under the border, saying they are used for smuggling weapons and explosives into Gaza.

On Thursday, gunmen killed a Fatah member in the Gaza Strip and a supporter of rival group Hamas was critically wounded in separate incidents amid an escalating power struggle between the two groups.

Witnesses and medics said armed men opened fire on the Fatah member in the southern Gazan town of Rafah. The man later died of his wounds.

In the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahia gunmen critically wounded a member of Hamas.

No one claimed responsibility in either incident.

In a fresh attack later on Thursday, gunmen shot a police
officer loyal to Fatah in his legs in Gaza's Jabalya district, witnesses said.

Fatah officials blamed Hamas gunmen for shooting the
officer. There was no immediate comment from Hamas.

Gaza and the West Bank have seen spiralling violence between Hamas and Fatah supporters this week, the worst
internal bloodshed since the Palestinian Authority was created in 1994.

At least 14 people have died, including a Hamas leader shot by gunmen near his mosque in the West Bank city of Qalqiliya on Wednesday.

Earlier this week Fatah gunmen threatened to kill leaders of the governing Hamas group, stoking tensions in the Palestinian territories
