(AP) del.icio.us Digg It!  new Last update - 17:02 04/10/2006 Lebanese army prevents Hezbollah supporters from protesting near border with Israel By The Associated Press BEIRUT, Lebanon - Lebanese army troops prevented a group of Hezbollah supporters from reaching the border with Israel on Wednesday to stage a protest, witnesses said. Soldiers recently deployed in the border town of Kafr Kila stopped buses carrying about 100 Hezbollah supporters, mostly young boys, who were traveling to the nearby Fatima Gate border fence to stage a demonstration. The troops told the demonstrators they could not go further and blocked the road with two armored personnel carriers. After an hour of negotiations, the troops allowed a small group of up to 12 boys to hang up a large caricature poster mocking U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the border fence, the witnesses said. Advertisement The incident happened as Rice was on her way to Israel from Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday. It was the first time the army was known to have intervened to stop a demonstration along the volatile border. It came a week after Israel Defense Forces chief said IDF soldiers have been instructed to shoot Lebanese stone-throwers along the border if they feel their lives are in danger. Cabinet ministers at Wednesday's weekly meeting were outraged over a protest Friday in which several dozen yellow-clad Hezbollah supporters threw stones across the border at IDF soldiers. Some of the ministers criticized the IDF for not responding to the violent protest. After IDF troops withdrew from south Lebanon in May 2000, ending an 18-year occupation, the Fatima Gate became a meeting place for Hezbollah supporters who came to throw stones at Israel. Israel and Hezbollah fought a 34-day war that began July 12 after Hezbollah guerrillas attacked an IDF patrol on Israel's side of the border and abducted two soldiers. The fighting ended last month after the United Nations brokered a cease-fire. Some 15,000 Lebanese soldiers have fanned out across south Lebanon following the cease-fire.
