New York Jewish community sending $9.3 million to battered Kiryat Shmona
By Amiram Barkat, Haaretz Correspondent

The UJA-Federation of New York has announced that it will be giving almost $10 million for the rehabilitation of Kiryat Shmona.

The money will not be transferred through the municipality but will be given to organizations the Federation works with on a regular basis.

This sum is above and beyond the $300 million raised so far by the United Jewish Communities (UJC) of North America to rebuild the north, about $44 million of which was raised by the UJA-Federation of New York.

The UJA-Federation said in a statement Tuesday that from the $9.3 million it expects to raise, the Jewish Agency will receive $2,676,960 for the tutoring of 3,756 children. Another $2,635,000 will go to the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)-Israel for economic assistance and care for
seniors and the disabled.

An allocation of $1,657,400 will repair sewage, electricity and about 100 shelters, and design 30 shelters to serve as community and youth centers in peacetime. An umbrella organization of Israeli associations for trauma treatment will receive $2,123,060 to develop treatment centers and workshops, and the community centers' association will receive $102,000 to upgrade the municipal library.

Allocations Committee chair Meryl Tisch said the residents of Kiryat Shmona, especially children and seniors, were suffering from trauma, and were strong despite the tragedy. She also stated that the UJA-Federation of New York wanted to respond quickly and comprehensively to their needs.
