Israel Air Forces aircraft fired missiles at two cars in the northern Gaza Strip after sundown Tuesday, witnesses and Palestinian officials said, wounding five militants.

The IDF confirmed it carried out an air attack but gave no further details.

Israeli missiles struck a car carrying Islamic Jihad militants and wounded two of them, Palestinian witnesses and medics said. Another missile hit a nearby vehicle and wounded three members of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades inside.

Palestinian security said the air strike was in the town of Beit Hanun, near the border with Israel. One of the cars was carrying militants from the Islamic Jihad and the other, Fatah gunmen, they said. No one was killed.

Israeli aircraft frequently target suspected Gaza militants in airstrikes, part of a campaign against militants firing rockets from northern Gaza at Israel. Islamic Jihad and Fatah militants often cooperate in rocket attacks on Israel.

Israel has stepped up its offensive against Palestinian militants in Gaza lately to try to stop rocket attacks and pressure armed groups to free an abducted Israeli soldier.

An earlier IAF strike on Tuesday morning hit a building in the southern Gaza town of Khan Yunis wounding three people, Palestinian officials said.

The targeted building housed a metal workshop that belonged to a man affiliated with Hamas, Palestinian officials said.

The IDF routinely targets such workshops, saying they are used to make weapons for Palestinian militant groups. The IDF had no immediate comment.

According to Palestinian sources, a Palestinian fisherman was killed Monday morning when an IDF gunship fired on his boat off the coast of Khan Yunis, in the Gaza Strip. The man was identified as Hani a-Najar from the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City.

An IDF spokesperson said the circumstances surrounding the incident were unclear, but that naval boats do fire warning shots at Palestinian fishing boats that stray outside of approved fishing areas.
