Ahmadinejad: Iran is determined to expand its nuclear program

Iran's president on Sunday said his country was determined to expand its uranium enrichment program and said allegations that Tehran was seeking nuclear weapons were a "big lie."

Speaking to professors at Tehran University, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran hopefully will increase its enrichment program to produce nuclear fuel.

The president has repeatedly rejected calls by the United States and its allies to stop enrichment.

"Allegations or charges by the United States than Iran is seeking nuclear weapons is a big lie," Ahmadinejad said during his speech, which was broadcast on state-run television.

The process of uranium enrichment can be used to produce electricity or to build nuclear weapons depending on the level of enrichment.

The U.S. alleges Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons, but Iran contends that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Ahmadinejad said in his speech that he hopes Iran will install up to 100,000 centrifuges to process uranium gas for enrichment in order to produce nuclear fuel.

He said Iran has no plans to suspend enrichment, not even for a day.

"Not a single person has a right to give up the rights of the Iranian nation," he said.
