New Israeli ambassador assumes duties in Jordan

A new Israeli ambassador has been assigned to Jordan, the fifth envoy to the Hashemite kingdom since diplomatic relations were established under a peace treaty signed in 1994.

Yaakov Rosen presented his credentials Tuesday to Khaldoun al-Talhouni, secretary general of Jordan's foreign ministry, the official Petra news
agency reported.

Rosen's credentials must be approved by Jordan's ruler, King Abdullah II -a diplomatic formality since the nomination of a new ambassador is usually endorsed by the Jordanian government prior to the envoy's arrival in the kingdom.

Rosen served as charge d'affaires at the embassy in Jordan shortly after
relations were established 12 years ago, ending a formal state of war that had existed since 1948.

Rosen replaces Yacov Hadas Handelsman, who ended his term last December, said Jacob Raber, the Israeli Embassy's press attache.

Appointing a new Israeli envoy was deferred until after the Israeli elections last March.

A new Jordanian ambassador took office in Israel two months ago. Ali al-Ayed replaced Marouf al-Bakhit, who became Jordanian prime minister last November.

Al-Ayed, 42, is a career diplomat. He served as charge d'affaires at the
Jordanian Embassy in Washington and foreign ministry spokesman in Amman from 1997 to 2001. Before taking up his post in Israel, he handled political affairs at the prime minister's office
