Gadi Eisenkot named head of IDF Northern Command
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent

Israel Defense Forces Major General Gadi Eisenkot will replace Major General Udi Adam as GOC Northern Command, it was announced Wednesday.

The nomination was approved by Defense Minister Amir Peretz during a meeting with Chief of Staff Dan Halutz.

Eisenkot spent most of his career in the Golani Brigade, eventually becoming its commander.

He later served as military secretary under then prime minister Ehud Barak, and as commander of IDF forces in the West Bank.

Eisenkot is currently serving as Head of Operations Directorate. His replacement has yet to be named.

Adam resigned as GOC Northern Command on September 13, after Deputy Chief of Staff Moshe Kaplinsky was sent to the north as Halutz's representative during the war in Lebanon.
