IDF soldiers suspected of beating Palestinian civilians
By Itim

The Jaffa Military Court remanded Wednesday four Israel Defense Forces soldiers, suspected of severely beating two Palestinians at a check point on August 26.

Military investigators secretly recorded one of the suspects, who described the event as a lynch. "[The soldiers] had this thing, where every Arab should be killed," he said.

The soldiers are accused of abuse, aggravated assault, looting, and disruption of legal proceedings.

According to allegations, the check point commander, a sergeant, was involved in the attacks.

The remand of the two main suspects was extended, while the two others were transferred to be held within their units.

The first complaint against the soldiers was filed by a 27-year-old Palestinian resident of Nakura, a village near Nablus. According to his testimony, the soldiers severely beat him, stole his money, and tore his pants and ID card. Following the alleged assault, the man required medical treatment.

According to allegations, a short while later the soldiers attacked another Palestinian at the same check point. According to his testimony, the soldiers beat him with their fists and with a stick, and stole NIS 1,000 from his wallet, as well as his cellular phone, with which they photographed themselves. He also required medical treatment.

The main piece of evidence in the case is the recording, obtained by military police investigators, of a phone call made by one of the suspects, in which he describes the second assault.

According to the recording, the 18-year-old Palestinian was well dressed, reported that he was on his way to a family wedding, and did nothing to provoke the attack.

In the recording the soldier describes how one of the soldiers, "took a wooden stick," told the Palestinian, "I'll bust open your head," and then proceeded to beat him, while he pleaded for his life, until blood gushed from his head.
