Haaretz.com senior editor Bradley Burston wins award for Mideast journalism
By Haaretz Service

Haaretz.com Senior Editor Bradley Burston has been named a recipient of the Eliav-Sartawi Awards for Middle East Journalism, an annual prize for Arab, Israeli and international journalists.

Burston's winning piece, "Let their people go," appears in his blog "A Special Place in Hell" on the Haaretz Website.

The Eliav-Sartawi Awards are given by Search for Common Ground, an organization founded in 1982, which works to transform the way the world deals with conflict. The award is in recognition and encouragement of journalists whose writing fosters better understanding and political dialogue in the Middle East.

The Common Ground Awards were created in 1998 to honor outstanding accomplishments in conflict resolution, community building, and peace-building.

Two other journalists have also been honored this year: For an Arab publication, Vivian Salama, of the Daily Star in Egypt, and for an international publication, Simone Korkus, writing in the Belgian weekly magazine Knack.

The award ceremony will be held at the United Nations building in New York on November 1.

Other recipients for 2006 include the newly elected president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first woman to lead an African nation. The awards also recognize the Sesame Workshop, which has been creating children's educational television for 38 years.

An award was also given to musicians David Broza of Israel, and Palestinians Wisam Murad and Said Murad, who collaborated on the song "In My Heart," which describes the bond that Israelis and Palestinians share for the same land. The song was premiered simultaneously on Israeli and Palestinian national radio.

Burston has been working as a journalist for 20 years. He covered the first Palestinian uprising as Gaza Strip reporter for the Jerusalem Post, later serving as the paper's Military Correspondent during the Gulf War.

During the 1990s, Burston covered Middle East peace talks and Israeli politics for Reuters, before joining the staff of Haaretz in 2000. A native of California, he has lived in Israel since 1976.
