Hamas sources: Prisoner swap negotiations at dead end
By Avi Issacharoff, Haaretz Correspondent, and Reuters

Negotiations for a prisoner exchange between Israel and the Palestinians have reached a dead end, sources in Hamas said Saturday.

The sources said the talks, on the exchange of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, have ceased due to Israel's refusal to respond to demands made by Palestinian militant groups.

The sources, interviewed in the Palestinian daily Al-Ayam, said no communication is currently taking place between mediators and the soldier's captors.

Meanwhile, IDF troops clashed with Palestinian militants in a village in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, Palestinian witnesses said.

A 23-year-old Islamic Jihad gunman was critically wounded in the clashes in the village of Khozaa east of Khan Younis, medics said.

An IDF spokeswoman said troops did not open fire at the militants.

IDF forces have been moving in and out of the area in recent days as part of a broader offensive launched after militants from Gaza captured Shalit from his post near Israel's border with Gaza in a June 25 raid.
