Report: IDF arrests 5 Palestinian intelligence officers

Palestinian sources said Israel arrested five senior officials from the Palestinian General Intelligence Service in an overnight raid on Friday, Israel Radio reported.

The officials include Mohammad Abdel Hamid, commander of intelligence in the West Bank town of Salfit.

A Palestinian security source in Salfit said the arrests were apparently made in the wake of an investigation being carried out by the General Intelligence Service against a man suspected of collaborating with Israel, Israeli media reported.

The Israel Defense Forces are seeking the arrest of an additional Palestinian officer who was not apprehended Friday.

Meanwhile on Friday, Fatah officials told a Nazereth-based newspaper that the faction had made a strategic decision to declare a third intifada against Israel, citing the failed peace talks as the reason for their resolution.

A top Fatah official interviewed by the newspaper said the third intifada will have a widespread popular base, adding, however, that unlike the previous popular struggle against Israel, which was sparked in September 2000, the movement will not endorse armed struggle.
