Iran's first lady joined her husband's condemnation of Israel on Sunday,
in a rare public appearance at a Rome forum on the eve of a U.N. summit to fight hunger.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's wife Azam al-Sadat Farahi, who is believed never to have previously addressed a public gathering, appeared in a forum of wives of heads of state led by Suzanne Mubarak, wife of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The summit on strategy to fight world hunger began yesterday at the Rome headquarters of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

An engineer with a master's degree in education, Farahi was a university lecturer until her husband was elected president in 2005.
