Rail workers suspected of robbing employee carrying company cash
By Yuval Goren Haaretz Correspondent

Two senior Israel Railways employees are suspected of involvement in the robbery of a courier transporting fare money collected from train stations, and then fleeing with the wrong bag.

The director of the government-owned rail company's operations branch and his brother, the director of a train station in the central region, were detained yesterday. The wife of the station chief was also held on suspicion of assisting the alleged crime.

The courier arrived at Tel Aviv's Savidor Central Railway Station on Friday morning, and waited in his vehicle while another employee was expected to bring him envelopes containing money collected from passengers at several stations throughout the morning. While the courier waited, a masked perpetrator wielding a knife demanded he hand over the bags holding the money.

After the courier fled the scene, the perpetrator took one of the bags, fleeing in a getaway vehicle driven by another individual. A bystander recorded the getaway vehicle's license plate number and reported it to the police.

Several hours later, police located the vehicle at a home in Lod. After detaining one of the individuals at the scene, they were shocked to learn that the suspect they had in custody is actually a station chief. At the same time, police located the second suspect (the operations director, a resident of the Modi'in area), and later his wife.

"We suspect that these two knew the courier's route well, and planned to rob him after he had collected money from several stations," said police Chief Superintendent Nir Levy of the railway employees under suspicion. "In addition to the fact that we caught them, to their great dismay they took the wrong bag."

The suspects' attorneys rejected the police allegations.

A statement from Israel Railways said the company received the news of the arrests with "shock."

The suspects appeared last night at a Tel Aviv court. The station chief's remand was extended by five days, and police said they have reasonable suspicion of his involvement in the incident. The remand for the suspect's brother was extended by one day, and his wife by three days.
