Soccer / Hapoel steamrolls Vienna to grab top spot in Group C
By Haaretz Sports Staff

In the week leading up to their Europa League Group C match against Rapid Vienna, Hapoel Tel Aviv players made no secret that they would settle for a draw against the Austrian club on its home pitch. It is unlikely that either club expected the visitors to dominate as thoroughly as they did, shocking Rapid 3-0 in the freezing cold before a disappointed home crowd at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna last night.

By virtue of the win, Hapoel is currently in sole possession of first place in Group C. Hamburg - which prior to yesterday had been tied with Hapoel in the standings - settled for a scoreless draw against Glasgow Celtic at HSH Nordbank Arena last night.

Midfielder Avihai Yadin, who was inserted into the starting lineup by coach Eli Guttman in favor of Zurab Menteshashvili, opened the scoring for Hapoel in the 12th minute after his shot from 20 meters was deflected by a Rapid defender. The long ball tailed into the far left corner of the goal, just beyond the outstretched arm of Austrian goalkeeper Helge Payer.

Hapoel put the game further out of reach in the 65th minute thanks to a brilliant solo run by midfielder Gil Vermuth. Just five minutes later, Hapoel's Bibras Natkho capped a splendid night for the Israeli team, taking a pass from Vermuth on the left side of the box and calmly slipping the ball past Payer.

Natkho's goal sent the hundreds of Hapoel fans who made the trip to Austria and braved the bitter cold into delirium.
