Netanyahu: Palestinian elections complicate relaunch of peace talks
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told senior cabinet members on Wednesday that Israel's goal is to quickly enter into peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, yet presidential elections in the West Bank are likely to complicate the resumption of such talks.

The premier made the statements during a meeting of a senior ministerial panel on sensitive defense and diplomatic matters. The discussions revolved around the latest developments in the Palestinian political arena, including the latest developments in the Palestinian Authority-ruled areas in the West Bank as well as the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu noted that the prospect of Palestinian presidential elections compels the PA leadership to harden its positions vis-à-vis Israel, thus making it more difficult to advance the diplomatic process.

The premier and his ministers were given detailed briefings by officials from Military Intelligence, the Shin Bet security service, the Mossad, the Foreign Ministry, the Public Security Ministry, the Coordinator for Government Activities in the Territories.

The IDF chief of staff also provided the ministers with the latest information on the seizure of the Iranian arms ship that was bound for Hezbollah.
