Barak: Impasse in peace talks only helps Hamas
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Palestinians, Clinton

Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned on Saturday that the impasse in peace negotiations only benefited the militant Palestinian organization Hamas, ahead of the arrival of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"A dead end in the diplomatic process will only serve Hamas and the other extremist elements in the region," said Barak in a statement.

Clinton was set to arrive later in the day in a new U.S. effort to relaunch peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Before shuttling to Israel, she held talks Saturday in Abu Dabi with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In the statement, Barak said: "It's essential that all the sides make an effort to start negotiations; this is a unique opportunity."

He added that officials would discuss with Clinton steps the Palestinian Authority, Israel and the United Sates could take in order to allow for the renewal of negotiations in the coming weeks.

Barak said Israel appreciates Clinton's efforts, "[which] strengthen the ability to make a positive contribution to the relaunching of the diplomatic process."
