Panel: Segregation of sexes on Haredi buses is illegal
By Tomer Zarchin, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel news

The segregation of men and women passengers on buses is illegal - even if the passengers themselves decide to travel so, a panel has said in a petition the state prosecution relayed to the High Court on Tuesday.

The Center for Jewish Pluralism filed the petition, which concerns bus routes traveled by ultra-Orthodox Jews on which men and women sit separately.

High Court justices discussed the petition on Tuesday; Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz will decide on whether to adopt its recommendations in the coming weeks.

The prosecution noted that the Transportation Minister has yet to approve the committee's conclusions and his decision on the separated bus lines will only be settled in several weeks.

The High Court had ordered the establishment of the committee following a number of petitions from the non-Haredi public, including one by the Movement for Progressive Judaism,.

The petitions argued that advocates for such separate lines discriminate against passengers who are not interested in segregation, especially against women who are forced to sit in the back of the bus.
