Peres: Unlike Hamas, Israel protects its children
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

President Shimon Peres blasted the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Monday for using children as "human shields," in the wake of a United Nations report that accused Israel of failing to protect civilians during the Gaza war.

"In the media they say that more children are killed on the Palestinian side, and that children are not killed on ours," Peres told schoolchildren at Kibbutz Cabri, in northern Israel.

"And I say this is right," he continued. "We know how to give security to our children, defend the children, not use them as human shields and not send them out in front of us."

The UN report, which was authored by South African jurist Richard Goldstone, accused both Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes during the winter offensive, but focused mainly on alleged Israeli offences.

Some of the children who came to hear Peres speak went to the same school that abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit had attended.

"The question isn't only a question of price; we are up against an organization that has no rules, has no laws, and is impossible to trust - an organization which uses children as shields," Peres said.

"Gilad Shalit is everyone's soldier, everyone's son - and the government of Israel is doing everything possible in order to bring him home."

In comments published Thursday, a senior Hamas official said the Islamist group is conducting intense negotiations with Israel over the release of Shalit, who was kidnapped by Gaza militants in a 2006 cross-border raid.
