Don't pop the bubbly
By Anshel Pfeffer

The defense ministry knew long in advance that they would be scrutinized for lavishness once the state comptroller report got out. In an attempt to reduce the damage, a farewell party for one of the ministry's most esteemed workers was allocated a budget of only a few thousand shekels.

After working for the ministry for 36 years, Victor Bar Gil is moving on. Over the course of his long career he held numerous positions. Most recently, he led several key projects - including the construction of the security fence along Israel's northern border following the Israel Defense Forces withdrawal from Lebanon. On retirement from the ministry, Bar Gil is expected to take on the position of chief of the Israeli defense delegation to Thailand and South East Asia. (See more, Page A3)

In anticipation of the criticism this week, the planners of the good-bye party were told to save as much as they could. Food will be prepared in the ministry's dining room, and only soft drinks will be provided. The entertainment was entrusted to soldiers of the Education Corps and the host will be an Army Radio serviceman.

"It was very clear," a defense ministry official said, "that any attempt to do something a little more dignified for Victor would be attacked by the media."
