The preliminary list of candidates for the Best Foreign Language Film

"Ajami" was also nominated in the Discovery category of the European Film

cademy awards, where Israeli films have been on the short list of nominees for two years running ("Beaufort" in 2008 and "Waltz with Bashir" in 2009), leaving expectations high.

"Ajami" won a prestigious local prize, the Israel Film Academy's Ophir Award for Best Film, last week.

Israel's entry will likely face tough competition. As of Wednesday, 54 films were on the preliminary list.

Last year, the Japanese film "Departures" by director Yojiro Takita was the surprise winner over favorites Ari Folman's "Waltz with Bashir" and "The Class," a French entry. This year the Japanese have nominated "Nobody to Watch over Me" by Ryoichi Kimizuka, which deals with the power of the media and the danger it entails.

Michael Haneke's "White Ribbon," winner of the Palm d'Or at Cannes, is
Germany's entry, while Austria will be represented by Iranian director Arash Riahi's "For a Moment, Freedom," about Iranian refugees in Europe.

Australia usually does not submit movies in the foreign language category, which bars English-language productions, but this year entered "Samson and Delilah" by Warwick Thornton, a film in an Aboriginal dialect about life in the outback.

Italy nominated Giuseppe Tornatore's "Baaria," which opened the Venice
Festival, and whose director won the 1990 foreign film Oscar for "Cinema
Paradiso." Italians are hoping the film will make up for the poor Italian
showing at the festival, which ended two weeks ago with Israeli film "Lebanon" by Samuel Maoz taking top honors.

The short list of five nominees for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar will be announced February 2.
