IAF scrambles aircraft in north due to false alarm
By Anshel Pfeffer

Israel Air Force fighter planes were scrambled to the northern border Sunday, Yom Kippur eve, after a false alarm was received of a possible incursion by an unmanned aircraft from Lebanon.

The sight of the planes, which patroled the northern skies for close to an hour, frightened residents in the north. Many residents were seen leaving synagogue around 7 P.M. and looking skyward in surprise.

The Israel Defense Forces said that for now, Hezbollah does not want escalation on the northern border, and is still occupied with rehabilitating its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

At the end of the Second Lebanon War, Hezbollah launched Iranian-made Ababil drones, which are capable of carrying explosives, at Israel. The drones were intercepted and shot down by the IAF.

In the years before the war, drones penetrated Israeli air space on two occasions without the IAF intercepting them.

Since the Second Lebanon War there have been five incidents of rocket fire from Lebanon into northern Israel. In all the incidents, a total of nine rockets were fired, resulting in one injury. In all cases the rockets were fired by radical Palestinian groups affiliated with Al-Qaida operating in the area of Sidon. The most recent case was two and a half weeks ago, when two rockets hit an open area in the Upper Galilee.

In response to the latest rockets, the IDF fired 12 shells from an artillery battery toward the launch site.
