The Israel Defense Forces was to impose a general closure on the West Bank at midnight on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which begins on Sunday evening.

In a statement, the army said it would lift the closure at midnight on Monday, in accordance with security assessments.

The IDF said that for the duration of the closure, persons in need of medical attention will be permitted to pass for care. It added that the passage of humanitarian aid as well as aid workers and other officials would be authorized by the IDF District Coordination and Liaison office.

"The IDF will continue to operate in order to protect the citizens of Israel while maintaining the quality of life of the Palestinian population in the area," the army said.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

Jews across the world traditionally spend the day fasting and praying. In Israel, the country essentially shuts down for the day.
