Iranian moderate: Our security agents are 'worse than Zionists'
By News Agencies
Tags: Mehdi Karoubi, Israel News

Moderate Iranian defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karoubi said Saturday that Iranian intelligence agents were handling detainees with harsher methods than those used by Israel, his website reported.

"The behavior of Iran's security agents is worse than that of the Zionist (Israel) in the occupied Palestine...Can you put detainees under mental pressure in mosques, schools and in the basements of government offices?" Karoubi said in a letter addressed to Intelligence Minister Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei.

Iran's opposition leaders called on senior clerics on Saturday to help secure the immediate release of detainees arrested since the country's disputed June 12 presidential vote, the Ghalamnews website reported.

"The only way out of this situation is...to immediately release detainees...We are very worried about their physical and mental health...this imposed state security should end...It is wrong to link pro-reform detainees to foreign countries," said a joint statement issued by moderate defeated candidates and former president Mohammad Khatami. It was addressed to top clerics.

The disputed presidential election sparked a wave of mass opposition protests in Tehran and other parts of the country. According to Iranian official reports, at least 20 people were killed and more than 1,000 arrested in the protests.
