Report: Hamas accuses Israel of dumping 'aphrodisiac' gum on Gaza

A Hamas official on Tuesday accused Israel of exporting to the Gaza Strip chewing gum laced with an aphrodisiac to "corrupt the young," according to a report in AFP.

"We have discovered two types of stimulants that were introduced into the Gaza Strip from Israeli border crossings," a Hamas police spokesman told the French news agency. "The first type is presented in the form of chewing gum and the second in the form of drops."

According to the report, the coastal territory's Hamas rulers claim to have detained several members of a gang involved in the import over the last two years who "admitted during the investigation they were linked to the Zionist intelligence services."

The police spokesman told AFP that one of the detained suspects said that the alleged Israeli intelligence officer who supplied the products "did not want money, but to distribute the products among the young people of Gaza."

The Israel Defense Forces has refused to comment on the allegations, though one army source was quoted by AFP as calling the story "absurd."

Israel imposed a near-total embargo of the Gaza Strip in 2007 after Hamas militants violently took control of the territory. Basic necessities are allowed in and out of the territory, but most other products are restricted.
