Rescue workers find body of Israeli tourist who fell to death in Peru

Rescue workers and Israeli volunteers in Peru early Monday found the body of an Israeli tourist, 23, who went missing after falling down a 200-meter incline to her death near the city of Cusco on Saturday.

The woman was named as Galit Sasson of Nes Tziona.

Sasson had been traveling on a minibus from the world famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu to Cusco with Israeli traveling companions on Saturday when the incident occurred. She left the minibus to smoke a cigarette when it stopped for a break, and fell down the ravine after apparently slipping on a rock and losing her balance.

Local police and rescue services scanned the area for Sasson's body after being contacted by her Israeli friends.

Israel's deputy ambassador to Peru, Gadi Dagan, joined in the search after the Israelis contacted the Foreign Ministry, which passed on the message to the Israeli embassy in the Peruvian capital Lima.
