A Hamas official on Wednesday said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak didn't know what he was talking about when he said abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit is in good condition

Shalit, who was abducted in a cross-border raid, has been held captive by Palestinian militants in Gaza since June 2006.

Egypt has been mediating attempts to trade hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for Shalit.

Mubarak said on Tuesday that Shalit is in good condition and added that he hopes the issue of the soldier's release will be resolved soon.

Mubarak's comments came during a news conference with President Shimon Peres, who was visiting Cairo.

Hamas negotiator Osama al-Muzaini said Mubarak's comment was meant for public relations consumption and reflected his wishful thinking.

Al-Muzaini said nobody knows Shalit's condition, except his captors.
