Guggenheim Museum buys new work by Palestinian artist
By Dana Schweppe

The Guggenheim Museum in New York has purchased a new video art installation by Palestinian artist Sharif Waked, entitled "To Be Continued," to become part of its permanent collection. Waked, 44, a native of Nazareth who won the Science and Technology Ministry's Culture and Art Prize in 2007, has thus become a contributor to one of the world's most distinguished museum collections. His latest work was funded by and displayed at the Sharjah Biennal, held in the United Arab Emirates, which is considered to be the Middle East's most important art event. In the video, Waked makes use of the images of final video messages by suicide bombers before they set out on their missions. Instead of explaining the terrorists' doctrine, an actor playing a bomber (Saleh Bakri) reads from "One Thousand and One Nights," in an effort to delay his mission. The Guggenheim's permanent collection numbers 7,000 artworks by more than 300 artists, dating from the end of the 19th century to the present day. (Ellie Armon Azoulay)
