Barak heads to London to meet with U.S. envoy Mitchell

Defense Minister Ehud Barak flew to London yesterday for a brief trip that will include another meeting with American Middle East envoy George Mitchell.

The two men will continue trying to resolve the dispute between Washington and Jerusalem over settlement construction.

Israeli officials are hoping enough progress will be made to allow Mitchell and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to finalize an agreement when the former visits Jerusalem next week.

Asked about this issue at a meeting of Likud Party ministers yesterday, Netanyahu said no deal had been reached with Washington yet, "and all the reports saying we have agreed to freeze construction in the settlements are the sole responsibility of those who publish them."

At a separate meeting of the full cabinet, Netanyahu said his government had "brought about a national consensus on the idea of two states for two peoples.

"The outlines of this consensus are, first of all, that the Palestinians must recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people, and this also means the problem of the refugees will be solved outside the State of Israel; and that Israel needs, and will receive, defensible borders, which also includes a full demilitarization of the Palestinian state," he said.
