First MK to give birth while serving in Knesset has 8th child

Yisrael Beiteinu MK Anastassia Michaeli early Sunday morning gave birth to her eighth child, a boy.

Michaeli has thus become the first MK in the history of the House to give birth while in office.

Nurit Elstein, the legal counsel to Israel's parliament, recently handed down her opinion that MKs are not entitled to maternity leave. That's because employer-worker relations do not exist between the lawmakers and the Knesset, or between the Knesset members and the public.

"I'll work as usual, maybe from home," she told Haaretz two months ago. "Usually I would bring my children with me to work after giving birth. I'm not interested in sitting at home with the infant. When you have a child every year it's different; I don't even remember that I have a belly, only at night when I can't sleep because of cramps, and it makes no difference to me even when there's a baby. I can do everything at the same time. As far as I'm concerned, I would take him to the plenum too. All you do is sit there, you don't have to do much."
