Africa Israel in Givatayim urban renewal project
By Guy Liberman

Lev Leviev's Africa Israel Residences is finalizing a contract for an urban renewal project on Lavi Street, Givatayim, between Lavi and Ben Gurion streets.

The project calls for two 29-story residential towers where four low-rise buildings now stand. It was approved in principal this week by the Tel Aviv Regional Planning and Building Committee.

Even though this site is now in the heart of Ramat Gan, it has remained in the Givatayim municipal jurisdiction, based on its original affiliation. The 69 apartments there, of 50 square meters each, were built in 1936 by laborers who bought the land and built their homes there.

The two planned towers Leviev is planning will have 225 apartments, averaging 115 square meters each. The towers were designed by Moshe Warshavsky of Simona Bar Sagi-Warshavsky Architects. Africa Israel is calling the new project Savyonei Lavi.

"Urban renewal is part of Givatayim's future," said Givatayim Mayor Reuven Ben-Shahar, after the plan was approved in principal. "I plan to do everything in my power to promote demolish/rebuild projects wherever possible, if the local residents want this.

"Anyone who has Givatayim's best interests at heart realizes that such projects significantly improve the quality of life of all the city's residents, not only those who live at the site slated for renewal."

An Africa Israel Residences spokesman said that the company views urban renewal projects as a strategic goal for the company over the next few years, and is considering similar projects.
