PA backtracks and supports Dead Sea for 'Seven Wonders'

The Dead Sea will make the list of candidates for the new "Seven Natural Wonders of the World", after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas agreed yesterday to support the initiative. Less than a week ago the Palestinian Authority said it would not support the Dead Sea's candidacy, because it is being sponsored by a West Bank settler council in the Jordan Valley. (Haaretz Staff)

Israeli troops wound four Palestinian boys among stone-throwers

Israeli Defense Forces soldiers yesterday shot and wounded four Palestinian youths, all reportedly under age 16, while firing at protesters throwing stones at Israeli civilian vehicles, an Israeli military spokesman and medics said. Three Israelis were wounded in a stone-throwing incident earlier in the day. (Reuters)

Fatah: Egypt saved the Palestinian talks

Egypt's intelligence service kept talks aimed at reconciling Hamas and Fatah from collapsing completely, a Fatah negotiator said yesterday. "Egypt saved the Palestinian reconciliation from failing, and (intelligence chief) Omar Suleiman played a vital role in pushing the two sides to reach an agreement," said Azzam al-Ahmad, the head of the Fatah bloc in the Palestinian Legislative Council, before leaving Cairo for Ramallah. PA minister offers to quit over J'lem budget

The Palestinian Authority's minister for Jerusalem said yesterday he had tendered his resignation to protest his level of funding. Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has so far refused to accept his resignation, however, Hatem Abdel-Qader said. "Homes are being demolished because we cannot pay for court appeals," he said. (Reuters)

IDF opens major W. Bank checkpoint to pedestrian traffic

The Israel Defense Forces yesterday opened the Hawara checkpoint in the West Bank to ease the passage of Palestinian pedestrians. The decision follows the IDF's move a little over two weeks ago to open the checkpoint to vehicular traffic. Hawara is used by thousands of Palestinians every day and separates Nablus from the rest of the West Bank. (Anshel Pfeffer)

Activists to continue boat trips to Gaza

International activists say they will again set sail from Cyprus to blockaded Gaza despite Israel having impounded one of their boats. Free Gaza Group spokeswoman Greta Berlin said yesterday that another Gaza trip is planned for mid-August once a new boat is acquired. The Israeli navy said on Tuesday that it commandeered the Greek-flagged ferry with 21 activists and three tons of medical aid aboard after it ignored warnings to turn back. Israel said all passengers, including former U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, will be released. (AP)

Ramon says goodbye to Knesset plenum

"It's great fun being in the Knesset," outgoing MK Haim Ramon (Kadima) said yesterday in his farewell speech summing up his 26 years as a lawmaker. "Don't feel inferior," he told his colleagues, addressing the plenum. "You have a great privilege in being voted in and representing the public. Serve them without fear, without trepidation, without bias." Ramon held various governmental posts during his long political career, including serving as minister of justice and vice prime minister. He was first elected as an MK as a Labor candidate in May 1983. In 2007, he was convicted for indecent assault on a female soldier. (Yuval Azoulay)
