The lawyers respond
By Amit Benaroia

Jackie Matza's attorneys, David Libai, Daphna Libai and Navot Tel-Zur, issued a statement yesterday on behalf of their client: "We regret that the prosecution is sticking to its odd legal position that states the cabinet's legitimate and fitting appointment of Matza as Tax Authority head constitutes him taking a bribe. This argument becomes even stranger in light of the fact that it was never claimed that any foreign element aided him in his appointment ... and that Matza did not believe his appointment came about due to the intervention of external forces."

Matza's legal team yesterday asked Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Matters Yehoshua Lamberger to examine their arguments prior to the indictment, due to the public nature of Matza's former post.

"All the appointments made at the Tax Authority during Matza's term were entirely professional. The best candidates for the jobs were appointed, without any improper considerations coming into play."

Micha Fetman said yesterday on behalf of his client Shula Zaken that he regretted the state's decision to prosecute. "This is a wrong decision that contradicts the objective investigative evidence, which shows that Zaken did not commit a crime. I regret that beyond the fact that Zaken already has been suspended for more than a year due to this affair, she will now need to undergo a long and complicated trial in order to prove her innocence."
