Israel's Dudi Sela won through to the third round of the Wimbledon tennis championships on Wednesday after defeating 18th-seeded German Rainer Schuettler.

Sela, who recently reached a career high world ranking of 46, upset his more highly-rated opponent in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Sela overcame Schuettler in the first set after trailing 5-2, and never looked back after that, dominating the final two sets to complete the victory.

He will now play 15th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo for a place in the round of 16.

This is only the second time Sela has made it through to the last 32 of a grand slam tournament, after also making the third round at the Australian Open earlier in 2009.

Israel's top female player Shahar Peer was knocked out of the ladies' singles in the second round Tuesday, losing 6-3, 6-2 to 10th-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova.

Two-time grand slam quarter-finalist Peer continued a run of poor form that has seen her slip 40 places in the world rankings from a career high of world number 15.
