News in Brief

Madonna plans to bring her newly adopted 3-year-old daughter with her to Israel this September, when she is slated to give two concerts here, the British newspaper The Sun reported yesterday. Inter alia, Madonna plans to take daughter Mercy to see the Western Wall. "The Wailing Wall is a very sacred place for anyone with links to the Jewish faith, and she wants all the children to see it," a source close to the singer told the Sun. Madonna, though not Jewish, is intensely interested in kabbala. Mercy was adopted from Malawi earlier this month. Madonna will also be bringing her other adopted child, David Banda. (Itamar Zohar)

The steep drop in the Dead Sea's water level, of more than a meter a year, is threatening both the area's main road and a major industrial plant, the Dead Sea Works, a new study has found. The declining sea level has actually increased the flow of water through the Tze'elim River, causing its bed to deepen and widen, researchers from the Geo Teva consulting firm found. If nothing is done to change the situation, the riverbed is likely expand enough over the next 10 to 20 years to cause the road to collapse and threaten DSW's facilities. (Zafrir Rinat)

Yasmin Feingold, the champion kayaker who nearly drowned while training in the Yarkon River early last month, has been making an amazing recovery, her doctors said, and is therefore being released from the Loewenstein rehabilitation hospital in Ra'anana. Feingold, who suffered brain damage, will still need to come to the hospital almost every day for treatment, but will be able to sleep at home. "This is a very happy moment for her and for the medical team that has been treating her," said the hospital's director, Prof. Jacob Hart. The man who pulled her out of the Yarkon, Avi Toyvin, will receive a medal from President Shimon Peres for his good deed tomorrow. (Noah Kosharek)

Bug killers that contains organic phosphorus will no longer be legally available to household gardeners as of July 1. The Agriculture Ministry decided on the ban 18 months ago, due to studies showing that when pregnant women are exposed to this chemical, the baby's development is irreversibly impaired, both within the bomb and after birth. However, the ministry typically gives vendors 18 months to adjust to new regulations, so the ban is taking effect only next week. A similar ban has been in place in the United States for years. Israel Railways has banned a campaign advertising Sacha Baron Cohen's new movie "Bruno" because of what it calls controversial content. The movie's Israeli marketing firm, Forum Film, wanted to place signs in several railway stations showing the lead character, Bruno, played by Cohen, naked in a field of flowers. Following Israel Railways refusal, the campaign switched to pictures in which Bruno is shown in the field wearing shorts and a shirt. In the film, to be released in Israel on July 9, Cohen plays a provocative gay Austrian fashion reporter. (Dana Schweppe)
