News in Brief

Twenty-one people were diagnosed with swine flu yesterday, bringing the number of those infected with the virus in Israel to 152, the Health Ministry reported. So far, all those who were hospitalized with swine flu have recovered and have been released. The Health Ministry yesterday called on passengers who arrived on Continental flight 90 from New York on June 13 to see a doctor if they develop flu-like symptoms. During the current outbreak, over 35,000 people in 76 countries have been infected with the virus, and over 160 have died. (Ran Reznick)

Police believe that a number of boys who have not yet been questioned in connection to the alleged rapes of two 12-year-old girls reported earlier this week may have been involved in the case. Twelve boys aged 11-14 are suspected of raping the girls numerous times over the course of a year. They will be questioned by police in their coastal-plain community within the next several days. The boys allegedly threatened to tell the girls' parents that they smoked and to spread rumors about them if they refused to have sex with them. (Yuval Goren)

The Civil Aviation Authority will investigate two near-crash incidents that recently occurred at Ben-Gurion Airport, the Transportation Ministry said yesterday. On Sunday, an aircraft operated by Uzbekistan Airways almost landed on a runway on which an El Al flight was preparing for takeoff. An air traffic controller who noticed the incident instructed the Uzbekistan plane to circle again before landing, averting collision. In another case two weeks ago, an El Al airplane almost crashed into an Israir plane due to a malfunction in one of the airport's landing instruments. (Zohar Blumenkrantz)

The government is trying to defer implementation of the amendment to the Compulsory Education Law extending mandatory schooling from 9th to 12th grade. The chairman of the National Council for the Child, Yitzhak Kadman, yesterday sent a scathing letter to Minister of Education Gideon Sa'ar. "Stopping it might 'kill' a law which won across-the-board support and will help curb dropouts,'" Kadman wrote. The law was introduced two years ago, aimed at reducing student dropouts. Two weeks ago the government decided to delay its implementation as part of the Economic Arrangements Bill. (Or Kashti)
