Cabinet to IDF: Respond to any attack from Gaza

The political-security cabinet convened on Wednesday morning to discuss international pressure to open border crossings into the Gaza Strip, as well to debate as other defense issues involving the coastal territory.

During their meeting, the cabinet agreed that the Israel Defense Forces must respond to any attacks from the Gaza Strip.

The decision was made two days after IDF troops killed at least four Palestinian militants who were trying to cross into Israel from Gaza, apparently planning to launch an attack on an Israeli community bordering the Strip. The defense establishment said later that the militants also planned to abduct IDF soldiers once inside Israel.

The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement following the meeting on Wednesday, saying that Israel holds Hamas responsible for any act of aggression against Israel within the Gaza borders.

The statement went on to say that Israel is considering more ways in which to ease the restrictions on the Palestinian population in Gaza, while maintaining Israel's security interests.

The cabinet also instructed all those involved in efforts to secure the release of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been held captive by Hamas since June 2006, to make every effort to achieve his freedom.

The subcabinet is expected to adopt a U.S. proposal to allow for border crossings to open solely on condition that a supervising mechanism cais put in place to monitor goods entering the Hamas-ruled territory.

The future of the Gaza crossings was a focus of talks between U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell and the Israeli leadership on Tuesday.
