Netanyahu to make first trip to Europe as premier

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit Europe for the first time since being sworn in as prime minister earlier this year.

Netanyahu will stop in Rome on the 23rd of June to meet his Italian counterpart Silvio Berlusconi. The next day, the premier will meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris.

The prime minister was originally scheduled to visit the continent last week, but that trip was postponed out of concern that Netanyahu would be subject to considerable diplomatic pressure and criticism over Israel's settlements in the West Bank and its handling of negotiations with the Palestinians.

Netanyahu will depart for Europe after Sunday's anticipated appearance at Bar-Ilan University, where he will spell out his diplomatic policies.

In the coming days, European Union foreign ministers are expected to convene a gathering which will likely produce a policy statement on the Middle East peace process.

Israeli officials say the foreign ministers will likely adopt a resolution condemning Israel's construction in the settlements while urging Jerusalem to accept the formula of "two states for two peoples.
