Court frees 6 Haredim arrested during riots in J'lem
By Yair Ettinger

The six ultra-Orthodox protesters arrested during violent demonstrations Saturday over the opening of a municipal parking lot on the Jewish Sabbath were released yesterday by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court.

The court placed restrictions on the six. One is a minor, and three others are foreign citizens.

Police sources said they agreed to release the suspects in order to lower tension in the capital.

Demonstrators burned garbage bins in the Mea Shearim area while the court met around mid-day, though the violence quieted down quickly.

Even though the police did not present the court with clear evidence of the six's involvement in the riots, the police stated they intended to file indictments against all six on charges including blocking the street, endangering the public and stone-throwing.

The judge ordered the six to stay out of the center of town for the next three weeks, and they each posted bonds of NIS 3,000 to NIS 6,000. The judge did not require them to turn in their passports, as the police had requested.
