A Jewish man from the northern town of Upper Nazareth has been arrested Sunday for his alleged involvement in the fatal stabbing of an Israeli Arab from a nearby village.

The victim, Sameh Anouar Karawani of Maghar, was found near a municipal soccer pitch in Upper Nazareth.

It is suspected that the 22-year-old assaulted Karawani over an alleged romantic involvement between a female relative of his and Karawani.

Around 16:00 a report was received at the Upper Nazareth Magen David Adom rescue station which stated that a stabbed and unconscious young man was found near a local resident building.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene in an attempt revive Karawani. The victim was evacuated to Nazareth's Italian Hospital, where he finally died of his wounds.

A large police force, headed by Superintendent Lutfi Falah, was deployed in the area following the attack. The suspect was quickly apprehended and reenacted the scene for police.

During preliminary investigation the young man claimed that he had seen Karawani attempt to break into a nearby apartment, and that he stabbed him in an ensuing scuffle.

Later, however, the possibility rose that the young man had stabbed the Maghar resident over a relationship which the latter allegedly had with a relative of his, one which he did not approve of.

Also on Sunday, a Petah Tikva District Court on Sunday convicted police officer Shahar Mizrahi of shooting and killing an Israeli Arab in 2006, after the latter was suspected of breaking into a vehicle in Pardes Hannah.

Mizrahi, who was on the Hadera police force, fatally shot Mahmoud Ganaim, then 24, in July 2006. Police claimed that Ganaim, a resident of Baka al-Garbiya, had tried to run over one of the officers with the stolen car.

However, the victim's cousin, who arrived at the scene after the shooting, said that the car was parked on the side of the road at the time of the shooting.

Hadera investigators had been conducting undercover operations in Pardes Hannah in the wake of multiple reports of break-ins and burglaries, when they allegedly discovered two suspects trying to break into a car.

Police said that one of the officers approached them and identified himself as a policeman. They said that Ganaim began cursing the officer in Arabic, threatening to kill him, and then proceeded to in the car. Police added that officer then pulled his weapon and instructed Ganaim to get out of the car, but that he began driving toward him instead.

Mizrahi had claimed he felt his life was in danger, and that he opened fire in self-defense.
