Relocation, recession play role in WUJS growth
By Raphael Ahren

One Israel program bucking the recruiting trend is WUJS, designed for college graduates, which doubled its numbers this year. Its director attributes the program's success to moving away from the South. "No disrespect to Arad, but going there for six months was no longer speaking to young people," the director Mike Mitchell told Anglo File.

After 40 years, WUJS last summer closed its operations in the Negev town of Arad and moved to Jerusalem.

The six-month WUJS program so far received 63 applications for the first of two 2009-2010 cohorts. Last year, only 35 participants joined the September program. The Glasgow-born Mitchell projects a total of 100 participants this coming year compared to 50 in 2008-09.

He added that the move to the capital and the creation of an internship program in Tel Aviv were the main reasons for the renewed interest in the program. Ironically, perhaps, he said that while gap year programs mostly suffered from the recession, post-college programs benefited from it.

"Many university graduates aren't optimistic about finding jobs so they decide to take some time out and come to Israel. For post-high school programs, the parents are paying the bill, and parents who suffered economically might be less willing to send their kids on Israel programs. With post-college programs, in most cases participants are paying themselves, which a very different thing."
