Noam Shalit, the father of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, is to return on Sunday to Israel after a series of meetings in Washington and New York. Shalit met with special U.S. Middle East enjoy George Mitchell and the head of the Middle East desk in the National Security Council, Dan Shapiro.

Shalit asked both officials to make the issue of his son's return a priority, noting that Gilad Shalit's release was the key to a number of other issues pending between Israel and the Palestinians.

Shalit also met with Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, and David Meltzer, senior vice president for international services for the American Red Cross.

Shalit is known to object to the conduct of the International Red Cross with regard to his son's abduction and the conditions of his imprisonment.

Activists for Shalit's release demonstrated Friday outside Defense Minister Ehud Barak's home in Tel Aviv, including Israel Defense Forces conscript soldiers and reserve officers.

When it turned out that Barak was not home, the officers asked that an official from Barak's bureau take delivery of a letter. Later, Barak's wife Nili came down to take it.

"As reserve officers who lovingly give our best days for the homeland, raise our children with values of devotion and are prepared to sacrifice our whole world and that of our loved ones ... we say to you that Gilad Shalit's fate is a reflection of the values and morals of Israeli society. We demand you show true leadership and courage to bring Gilad home immediately," the letter read.
