Barak: Israel to weigh response to Qassam attack

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday evening that Israel would consider its response to a rocket attack on the Negev launched earlier by Gaza militants that ended a two-week lull in cross-border rocket fire.

"This evening, a lone rocket [was launched] in the direction of Kibbutz Magen. It is still unclear as to who fired it, but after the Mimouna, we will weigh how we need to respond," Barak said.

He was referring to the Mimouna celebration held by the Moroccan community the day after the Pesach holiday.

The rocket hit the Eshkol region in the western Negev, causing neither casualties nor property damage.

Barak added: "I repeat: I hope we will find the way to continue this quiet."

The last rocket attacks launched by Gaza militants took place on April 1, when three Qassam rockets were fired from the Strip.

On Monday, however, a booby-trapped fishing boat exploded near an Israel Navy vessel off the coast of the northern Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces chief of Staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, later Monday called the incident an "attempted attack."

Israel and Hamas have largely observed a fragile cease-fire in Gaza since the IDF ceased its offensive against the Palestinian Islamist group in mid-January.
