News in Brief

A Rehovot resident was arrested yesterday on suspicions of neglecting his blind, handicapped brother, police said. Police were called after passersby heard calls for help from a storeroom, where they found a blind, incapacitated 60-year-old man with a catheter lying on the floor. "He was in very bad condition, couldn't communicate with us at all," a police officer said. "There was nothing there but a bottle of water." One of the man's brothers was arrested. He told interrogators he took his brother to the shed "to get some air" several days ago. (Yuval Goren)

A 40-years-old woman was moderately injured in the Ramat Gan National Park when she tried to light a gas burner, and it exploded. Her children were slightly injured as well. Magen David Adom reported the woman had burns on her face and hands. One of the children suffered superficial burns, and the other was in shock. The reason for the explosion is under investigation. A Kiryat Motzkin man was arrested yesterday after cutting his father's car with an electric saw, destroying furniture in their house and threatening to damage gas pipes. The suspect, 30, who suffers from mental problems, was slightly hurt when he tried to attack the policemen who came to arrest him. Zevulun police commander Jamal Khachrush said the suspect had probably run amok in the house following an argument with his parents. (Fadi Eyadat)

The supermarket chain Tesco shouldn't be blamed for introducing a special U.K. hotline for complaints about it stocking Israeli products, a member of Britain's Zionist lobby told Haaretz. Some pro-Israel groups had attacked Tesco for setting up the hotline, which coincided with government talks on labeling Israeli products.

"Tesco acted as any business would act," Jonathan Hoffman said. "The finger should be pointed at the British government for holding these discussions in the first place and thereby fueling efforts by seekers of a total boycott of all things Israeli." The hotline has since been discontinued. (Cnaan Liphshiz)

Russia has concluded its first weapons deal with Israel, purchasing unmanned spy planes valued at around $49 million, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow told the daily Izvestia on Monday.

A military expert said the purchase was in reaction to the August 2008 war in the south Caucasus - where Georgia successfully employed the same drones against Russia. Russian officials said they would use the drones for testing purposes and to familiarize themselves with the planes. According to Russian media, the foreign purchase of military technology was the first by Russia since 1940. (DPA)

As many as 400,000 vacationers visited forests, nature reserves and parks across the country yesterday. The most popular site was the Hula Valley, where 8,000 came to picnic and watch birds. It was closely followed by the Ein Gedi nature reserve, with 6,910 visitors. The hot weather not only didn't dissuade families, but boosted attendance at some sites. The Kfar Blum kayaking club recorded a record 4,000 visitors. "There were no traffic jams on the Jordan, thanks to the powerful stream", said club director Gye Yermak. (Eli Ashkenazi)
