30,000 Israelis to flock to Sinai despite terror warning

Some 30,000 Israelis are expected to flock to Sinai by way of the border crossing at Taba for the Passover holiday this week despite stern warnings issued by the government's anti-terror office.

The Israel Airports Authority, which is responsible for operating the border terminals, released the findings on Tuesday. The numbers mark a 25 percent drop in the number of Sinai-bound Israelis compared to the same period last year.

The terminal at Taba underwent a "facelift" for the Passover holiday, which is considered the "opening salvo" of the summer travel season. Among the amenities added is a new biometric system that allows anyone with a biometric card to pass through a computerized aisle without waiting by the counters. In addition, more border control counters have been added in the terminal.

The IAA also estimates that some 10,000 Israelis will pass through the Yitzhak Rabin terminal in Arava between Israel and Jordan. The terminal sits three kilometers north of Eilat
