Women's basketball / Ramat Hen lives to see another day
By Arie Livnat and Ohad Shvirman

Maccabi Ramat Hen withstood a rally by Elitzur Ramle last night to prevail 71-63 and stay alive in the rival's state championship semifinal series. The best-of-five series is now 2-1 in Ramle's favor, with the two teams meeting in Ramle on Thursday.

With two minutes remaining, Sheri Sam made a three-point play to pull Ramle within a point at 61-60, and on the other end of the court Ramat Hen's Shay Doron missed a three pointer. However, LaToya Pringle came up with the rebound and stuck the ball back in. Ramle forward Abiola Wabara then missed an open shot from beyond the arc, while Hen Stein buried a three for Ramat Hen to put the game out of reach.

"She's on her way to being a lawyer," said Ramat Hen coach Edney Dagan of Stein, who scored 10 points. "I told her to come to morning practice this time, and it helped me to let her play." Stein came off the bench to be part of a balanced attack that saw five Ramat Hen players score in double figures.

The competitiveness between the two teams was palpable. At one point, Ramat Hen center Ayana Walker stuffed Sam in the paint, then the two players got into a shouting match. Walker told Sport 5 after the game that she was letting Sam know there was going to be another game. Walker added that the key to Ramat Hen's win was slowing down the pace. Indeed, Ramle's point total was its second lowest output this season, well below its average of 79.7 points per game.

In the other semifinal contest yesterday, Ramat Hasharon cruised past Bnot Hasharon 90-71 to clinch its series three games to zero. Jia Perkins led all scorers with 21 points, while Ebony Hoffman added 20.
