Israel to invest NIS 6 million in Pope's visit to Nazareth

Israel announced Sunday that it plans to invest NIS 5.7 million in a religious ceremony to be led by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit this May.

The pope will conduct a large mass on Mount Precipice, the Nazareth site where Jesus is said to have leapt to avoid an angry mob. The ceremony is expected to draw some 35,000 worshippers.

The state's investment will be used by the event's organizer, Gad Oron Productions, and does not include infrastructure costs.

The Nazareth City Council chose to entrust organization of the mass to an external production company, due to the proximity of the date, as well as the need to supervise such a complex logistical collaboration.

Organizers will still need to recruit funds for a satellite communication infrastructure, to transmit the mass to a world-wide audience. They must also arrange security measures and organize transportation to the event.

Vatican guidelines and requests for the ceremony are expected to reach Israel over the coming days. As of yet, Israel has only received the planned design for the
ceremony's set, part of which will comprise ritual artifacts.
