Egypt is not celebrating 30 years of peace with Israel

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram on Thursday waged harsh criticism against Israel in an editorial marking the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Camp David peace treaty.

The editorial accuses Israel of destroying Egyptian efforts to build bridges between the Arab world and Israel and denounces Israel for electing right-wing leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu and Avigdor Lieberman and backtracking from a prisoner exchange with Hamas.

"If you are interested in and are true to your ambition to achieve peace," says the editorial, addressing the nation of Israel, "you must obligate your leaders to end their despicable initiatives against Egypt."

The article also said, "There is no room for celebration. On this anniversary, there isn't an atmosphere of optimism and the facts on the ground are not pushing anyone toward celebration."

The treaty was signed on March 26, 1979. Israel marked the anniversary on Wednesday at a ceremony at Jerusalem's Hebrew University, where ambassadors said both countries had a duty to ensure that the wisdom and vision of Egypt's late Anwar Sadat and Israel's late Menachem Begin be fully realized.

Egyptian ambassador to Israel Yasser Reda said achieving a lasting peace between Israel and all its Arab neighbors demanded a just solution for the Palestinians.

"The tragedy of the Palestinian people is a permanent source of crisis," Reda said. "Certain regional powers" and extremist groups feed on it, seeking viciously to exploit opportunities to destabilize the whole region.

Reda said Israeli settlement activity on occupied land "not only narrows the window of opportunity" for a comprehensive peace in 2009 but also endangers the two-state solution that would establish a Palestinian republic alongside Israel.

On Tuesday, an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official said Cairo is not planning any events in recognition of the anniversary.

"Cairo doesn't need to explain or justify itself," read the Al-Ahram editorial. "It is clear to anyone following the mood in Egypt or other Arab countries sees that they are calling for the burial of the peace process."
